Launched in 2024, the world's newest PhD in the Learning Sciences prepares scholars and researchers to address our most vital challenges in education, technology, and society.

Classroom and out-of-class experiences mix experimentation, play, fantasy and design so that together we can imagine new ways of thinking and learning.

Who is this for?

This interdisciplinary degree is open to students from diverse backgrounds. Applicants from arts, humanities, STEM, or social sciences are all welcome. Study the material, cultural, and cognitive dimensions of learning.

Where is the program?

The hybrid PhD is based at Adelphi's New York City campus: currently in Downtown Brooklyn, we are moving to a new Manhattan Campus in 2026. The PhD is ideally situated to interact with New York City's vibrant arts and technology communities, and to impact the largest public school system in the U.S.

Funding is available!

Full-time Ammon Scholars, accepted each year, receive full tuition funding and a stipend. Additional partial funding is available for outstanding students working on MIXI research and other projects.

The Curriculum

Typically, students enter with a Master's degree, and can complete the PhD in 4-5 years of full-time study. Outstanding applicants without a Master's will be considered, and can earn an MA en route.
The 45-credit curriculum includes 8 classes, the learning sciences workshop, and a dissertation.

PhD students work closely with MIXI faculty on research projects with opportunities to present at conferences, publish in journals, and impact our community.

The Master’s in STEAM Teaching and Learning prepares students for careers in mathematics education, science education or computer science education, with accreditation for K-12 teaching in their discipline.

The program emphasizes interdisciplinary learning experiences and creativity. The term STEAM refers to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. STEAM represents an approach to STEM education that prioritizes creativity, design, reasoning, innovation, making, and technology, with a focus on teaching and learning in formal and informal learning environments.

The Maker Lab is at the core of the curriculum, where students design and construct their own hands-on projects using a variety of digital design and fabrication tools (3d printing, laser cutting, microelectronics, cnc embroidery, etc.)

With scholarships from the National Science Foundation you can complete this 30-credit Master's in one year to become a highly sought-after STEAM educator. Through MIXI's partnerships with NYC Teaching Fellows you can earn your Master's while making an impact in the classroom.

Become a science or mathematics teacher! Teach Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science, or Biology in grades 7-12, depending on your undergraduate major and transcript.

Teach computer science! The CS Ed track is available to candidates with an undergraduate minor or major in computer science or a related field (e.g. CIS, data science, electrical engineering), or those with sufficient personal or professional experience in computer science and/or programming.
CS Educators are certified as K-12 teachers in NYS.

Study STEAM Learning Sciences! Learning Sciences is the most flexible Master's track, open to students with any undergraduate degree who are interested in integrating STEAM and Maker pedagogies into their practice. This track is suitable for international students and NYS teachers seeking professional certification in their initial certification area.

Learn to use the latest technologies for learning: XR, AI, multimedia, games & simulations, networked learning, and more. We don't just follow the latest trends though, but engage with the long history of communications technologies and tools, to evaluate new approaches in terms of transformational learning, and potential for positive social impact.

Inside and outside of the classroom, Ed Tech students lead the way in designing learning environments that are culturally responsive, supportive of diverse learners, and pushing the boundaries of what is possible with technology.

The interdisciplinary curriculum builds on core courses in learning sciences, CS and informational technology, digital media & technology studies, and creative design. Ed Tech students come from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, including education, IT, media production, and STEM fields. Some are seasoned K-12 teachers, others are engaged with teaching and learning more broadly.

MIXI faculty teach a variety of graduate courses. Most 500 level courses are open to graduate students from other programs; some are available for advanced undergraduate students.
