We are pleased to announce the brand new Maps @ MIXI critical cartography club. The club is a fun, informal place to talk about and make maps, share your work, check out interesting parts of NYC on club outings, and learn new geospatial skills.
During our weekly meetings we will participate in informal workshops, work on your own and collaborative projects, hear from guest speakers, share resources, and head off site to explore the city, gather data, and test our maps.
We will also have snacks.
About the Club

Questions (not yet frequent asked)
- Do I have to come to all meetings? No! Come when you can. Drop in for a single meeting or come every week.
- Can I bring a friend? Please do, but we have to add their name to the list for the front desk. Send us an email or have them sign up.
- I’m not a student, but I like maps. Can I come? Our priority is for students, but we want to be open to the larger community. Send us an email (mcuringa@adelphi.edu)
- Do I need my laptop? No, but you might want it. We can help you get it set up for GIS work at home.
- What software will we use? That depends on what the club wants to do. Our focus is FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) and we use Python (Pandas, GeoPandas, Pygris, etc), QGIS, and OSM in a lot of our work. We are also meeting in our maker lab, so we will have the chance to design and build some GIS hardware, too, if we need it.
- I’m in high school and this sounds great…can I come? Probably, but please have a teacher or staff from your school send us an email.
- Will I have to pay for field trips? No, we will cover the costs for student members.
- Can I come late or leave early? Yes, it’s not class.
